SPECIAL EDUCATION
Walter Maginnis High School (WMHS) provides a continuum of special education and related services for students with disabilities. Special education services may be provided in the general class setting, resource room, separate class, or in the student's living unit. Students can receive services in more than one setting (e.g. some services may be provided in the regular education classroom and others in a resource room). Decisions about the location and type of special education and related services are made by each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) team and based on his educational needs, thus services vary from student to student. Each student who receives special education services must meet State of Minnesota eligibility criteria and have an IEP which describes his present level of academic and functional performance, special education needs, goals, objectives and services. The IEP is designed to meet each student’s unique needs, support his school success, and promote his independence, while ensuring that he receives a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). Students can receive services in the following disability categories: • Autism Spectrum Disorders • Blind-Visually Impaired • Deaf-Blind • Deaf and Hard of Hearing • Emotional or Behavioral Disorders • Developmental Cognitive Disabilities • Other Health Disabilities • Physically Impaired • Severely Multiply Impaired • Specific Learning Disability • Speech or Language Impairments • Traumatic Brain Injury Special education staff conducts frequent progress monitoring checks to accurately measure the educational progress of students with IEPs, and they individualize instruction variables in response to assessment results. Progress reports are completed and disseminated every grading period, as stated in each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). Special education evaluations are completed based on rules established through both State and Federal Special Education Law, along with best practice standards, and conducted by a comprehensive educational team. To facilitate the successful reintegration of students with disabilities, WMHS, in collaboration with the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), has established a reintegration action plan defining sending and receiving schools' responsibilities for each student with an active IEP who returns to a community school. A student support & reintegration coordinator facilitates each student's successful reintegration. The reintegration action plan was implemented July 1, 2016.
